Our Services

1
Pre-purchase survey
A pre-purchase survey is recommended before purchasing a boat. It is one of the most comprehensive types of marine inspections and is performed for the prospective buyer.
The purpose is to provide an independent assessment of the vessel’s visible and reasonably accessible components at the time of survey
2
Insurance surveys Insurance
Companies may require a current condition and value survey before issuing, renewing, or changing coverage. This inspection documents the vessel’s identity, general condition, major systems, safety equipment, estimated fair market value, and estimated replacement cost. The completed report can help the insurance company evaluate whether the vessel presents an acceptable risk. Insurance requirements vary, so boat owners should confirm any specific requirements with their insurance agent before scheduling the inspection.
3
Vessel Condition Inspections
A condition inspection can help an owner better understand a boat’s present condition, prioritize repairs, or prepare the vessel for sale. This service may be useful when: A boat has been sitting unused The owner is planning a major trip Repairs or restoration work are being considered The vessel is being prepared for sale The owner wants a professional second opinion The scope can be customized based on the vessel and the owner’s concerns.

About
Merritt Marine Surveying was founded by Mike Sewell to help boat buyers and owners make knowledgeable decisions about their vessels. Mike was raised around the lakes and rivers of Central Florida, where he developed an interest in boats and boat handling at an early age. As a teenager, he found an older Skeeter Honcho bass boat that needed extensive work. Mike and his father spent months restoring the boat, beginning a lifelong interest in vessel construction, repairs, mechanical systems, and restoration. Over the years, Mike gained experience working with a wide range of boats, materials, and marine systems. His background includes approximately 45 years of hands-on restoration experience and involvement with numerous vessel restoration projects. That experience led Mike to study the different construction methods, materials, machinery, and systems used throughout the boat-building industry. He founded Merritt Marine Surveying LLC in 2023 to bring that knowledge and practical experience to boat buyers, owners, and insurance clients.
